ADAPS members are encouraged to share their works and show off their photographic
talents with a stimulating and entertaining programme of photographic competitions
throughout the year.
Set Subject Competition
Every Summer we hold a 'Set Subject' competition, where a theme is chosen
and members then use their photographic endeavours to interpret that theme
in whatever creative way they choose. Previous years' themes have included
'song titles', 'landscapes' and 'sequences'.
Monthly Competitions
We hold a series of 'Open' Monthly Competitions from September to February
each year where members may enter photographs covering any subject matter
that they like. Monthly Competitions are a great incentive to practise one's
hobby and get out and take some photographs.
The Monthly Competitions season is spread over six months in the style of
a league table, with entries appraised by an external judge and marks awarded
out of 10 for each photograph. These marks are totalled each month in a table.
The member with the highest aggregate mark in each section at the end of the
six months competition cycle is declared the winner of that section and awarded
a trophy accordingly. The sections are 'Prints' and 'Slides' and there is
a special trophy awarded for 'Portraits' in memory of one of our late members.
For more information about entry criteria see the General Competition Rules
below.
Photo Battles
From time to time we meet up with other local camera clubs to do battle. Each
club enters a set number of prints and slides and these are assessed by an
external judge who awards marks. At the end of the competition the club with
the highest score has won the battle. It's all very friendly - but we hate
to lose ;-)
Annual Competition
At the end of the competition season in April each year we hold our Annual
Competition where members enter what they feel are their best works of the
year - slides and prints. An external judge is invited to assess each entry
and to award trophies to the winners.
Members may enter photographs in any or all of the following Annual Competition
categories:
- Open Pictorial (Prints & Slides)
as its name implies, this is an 'open' category where members may enter
general prints and slides in colour or monochrome covering any subject matter,
eg still-life, landscapes, reportage, etc....
- Open Monochrome (Prints)
another 'open' category, but images must be monochromatic (see Rules below).
Prints which have one or more colours added must be entered in other categories.
- Portrait (Prints & Slides)
a likeness of a real person or persons. This could include more than one
person, provided they are the main subject of the image. Environmental portraits
(in their surroundings) can be used. Candid portraits could also be included
in this category. Photographs of large groups or animals or pets will not
be considered as portrait and may be entered into the 'open' sections.
- Record (Prints & Slides)
a record photograph attempts to capture an image of something as though
one were preserving it for the history books and should be a true representation
of the subject matter, and should also carry a full and accurate title.
- Natural History (Prints & Slides)
animals, plants, flowers, living creatures, etc - the natural world around
us. Images must be an accurate representation of the species or subject matter
in the wild or native environment. No domesticated or zoo animals and no cultivated
or garden plants.
- Creative Colour (Prints)
rather than just a straightforward colour print, this category aims to
test the photographer's powers of originality and imagination to produce an
image that features the use of colour within it in an eye-catching and creative
way.
General Competition Rules
As with all competitions, we have some general rules:
Prints may be trade or home processed.
- Monochrome Prints:
All black and white and monochrome images are included. A black and white
image which has been modified by the addition of a single tone to the entire
image is defined as a monochrome print.
- Colour Prints:
All images other than those defined as monochrome are classed as colour images.
A black and white image which has been modified by the addition of partial
toning or by the addition of colour to any part of the image is defined as
a colour print.
We accept the use of digital imaging in competitions provided that all the
original components within the image are the exclusive work of the photographer.
The use of copyright free images or images sourced from elsewhere is not allowed.
The maximum number of entries allowed for all ADAPS competitions is upto 3
prints and upto 7 slides.
All entries must be no more than three years old.
Slides must be of a 2"x2" format and thumb spotted at the bottom
left hand corner. It is recommended but not essential that slides are glass
mounted. Name/title stickers must not be used on slide mounts. This is to
prevent slides from getting stuck inside projectors.
The minimum size of a photographic print should be no less than 48 square
inches. (This equates to a minimum print size of around 8"x6").
Prints must be mounted on any colour of standard card mount which is 20 inches
x 16 inches in size and should not exceed 4mm in thickness. (You can buy card
mounts in various sizes from crafts shops and photographic retailers, eg Jessops).
Particularly if window-mounted, the back of the mount must be flush and must
not have any protrusions which could damage other prints whilst being transported.
Similarly, mounts should not have any velcro or sticky tape attached which
could be likely to cause damage to other prints whilst being transported.
Any such images may not be accepted for entry into competition.
The following information should appear on the reverse of each slide/print:
- member's name
- title of image
- name of society
- competition section entered
All trophies remain the property of ADAPS and are awarded to winners on the
understanding that the winners will hold them in safekeeping for one year
and then return them by the week before the next year's Annual Competition.
If any member would like more information about entering competitions please
feel free to speak to the Competition
Secretary.
